Ephemeral Landscape Drawing

Drawing 1

Disturbing My Leaves -
This drawing was inspired by the space I was in. I walk my dog everyday in the same place.  I wanted to find a space that was familiar to me but that I had not noticed or hadn't given much thought to. I started looking around and was really drawn to the curb corners and the piles of leaves that were stuck there, as if they had been attracted by magnets. I started by pulling the leaves out of the corners and responded to the space I was given lines and shapes started taking place and I realized how much like a drawing it had already become. I continued to make these lines crisp and sharp like a drawing would be.

Approx. 17'x17'

Circles
My second drawing was placed on this white line because I liked the contrast of the road with the crisp white line. I wanted to use a small space but also an unusual place. Taking these seed pods out of the natural world and adding them to the manmade world.

Approx 4'x30'

Seeds

Memory
This last drawing was really a spare of the moment idea that I had as I was walking away from my other two drawings. I kept seeing puddles that I wanted to frame with these vibrant leaves as I tried taking pictures I noticed my reflection and how much it looked like a little window or mirror into another world.

Eraser Drawing

These drawings caused me some frustration especially the first one which I only used vine charcoal for. I started by applying the charcoal entirely to my page. I struggled to keep the surface clean every time I touched the surface charcoal would come of leaving marks from my hands. I eventually decided to work with that and walked over my drawing using my feet as erasers, They picked up the charcoal after walking over the surface I began working back into the footprints with my eraser to remove more charcoal.

My other Two eraser drawings were really about the sound. The second drawing I used rembrandt charcoal and I used my eraser on a point and worked it it circles in a rhythmic way. The third eraser drawing is where the sound really became part of the drawing I used black paper and white oil pastel, covering my black paper entirely with pastel, I then came back in and removed the oil pastel in circles with a carving tool. The sound was really loud and rhythmic. The fourth drawing I used my easer like a smudging tool to blend the charcoal together creating a texture on the surface.

White Paper Drawing

Our assignment was to fit an 18'x22' piece of white paper onto a 8'x10' piece of white paper using only gesso. For my first drawing I used strips of paper coiled up arranged in height order and glued together with gesso. I think it was successful with the negative space coming through the coils and the shadows. Each coil shows different value even on the white paper behind. This is really something I was trying to achieve I wanted to create value where I had none. All my materials were white and I wanted to explore ways my paper would be visible.

Approx. 8'x10'
Materials
8'x10'white paper
18'x22' white paper
Gesso

For my second drawing, I used the same method but instead of coils I stacked my strips on top of one another to create this interesting texture. In order to bring out this texture I created a wash with the Rembrandt charcoal and painted it over the ridges to create light and dark values. This mixed with the white gesso and left my drawing with an interesting texture which as it developed felt and resembled wood bark. I layered and layered my wash to wither the paper creating more texture and value to the drawing.
